Junior trio impress coaches in trial games

BASKETBALL

Kalgoorlie Miner - - SPORT -

Three of the region’s most promising basketballers are a step closer to representing WA at next year’s national championships after playing in trial games at the weekend.

Mackenzie Hoycard, Sam Julitz and Billy Hicks are in contention to make their respective under-18 WA Country sides to compete at April’s nationals in Ballarat.

The three competed at last weekend’s under-19 State Championships in Perth and played three games each.

Mackenzie was the star for her side, leading them to a perfect record at the championships despite not being eligible to compete in finals. The CBC star averaged 10.6 points across her three games, scoring a team high 15 points in WA’s 37-13 win against Joondalup.

Goldfields Giants development players Billy and Sam had a tougher weekend with their team losing all four of their games and posting a points percentage of just 75.30.

Both players had a hard time scoring, with Sam registering just 12 points across his three games, while Billy scored a solitary basket. However, their commitment to the team is bound to impress the coaches.

They will have a chance to shine on home soil in January, as the under-18s travel to Kalgoorlie-Boulder to take on the Giants in two practice matches.

The under-18 national basketball championships will be held in Ballarat from April 11-18.
