Application for show to go on at current venue delayed
Esperance and Districts Agricultural Society president Ewin Stewart wants to keep staging the group’s annual show at the Greater Sports Ground, with an application to extend the current lease before the Shire of Esperance.
However, the application, lodged in April, has been delayed, with the Greater Sports Ground Committee requiring additional time to consult local sporting clubs.
In 2010, EDAS and the Shire signed a five-year lease agreement, with an option for a further fiveyear term, that expired on June 30.
An application to extend the lease by 10 years and vary the boundaries slightly first went before the council in July, with members resolving to defer the item so the GSG Committee could discuss the lease with relevant clubs.
However, Shire manager of corporate support Jennifer Parry recommended that the item be deferred again at the council’s latest meeting on Tuesday night. “To date the meetings between the GSG Committee and other clubs that use the grounds have not been fully completed,” she said.
“Further discussions need to take place with regard to the (Esperance Soccer Association’s) desire to proceed to stage two of their development plans before the GSG Committee can reconvene.
“Deferment of this decision is unlikely to be cause for concern being that the agreement contains a ‘holdover’ clause.”
Mr Stewart said the EDAS’ proposal to modify the boundaries was slowing the application down, but the society wanted to continue holding the show at its current location.
