Club challenges community to beat the bulge
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder community is being encouraged to beat the bulge and take part in a city-wide Biggest Loser challenge.
The challenge is being hosted by local health group, Inspired Life, in a bid to tackle the region’s high obesity rate.
Inspired Life general manager Willow Shanks said with an obesity rate of about 70 per cent, overweight individuals were at higher risk of developing chronic diseases.
“This challenge will take on this problem by providing a program that addresses healthy eating habits, incorporating regular exercise into your day and provides motivation, support and education for participants,” she said.
Mrs Shanks said each participant would get their own personal coach to support them throughout the challenge.
She said training and meal plans would be provided, alongside other coaching tips.
The fitness club has been running weight-loss challenges for the past decade and Mrs Shanks said all had proved to be a success.
“Over the years we have seen participants lose tonnes of weight, greatly improve their fitness levels and create healthy habits for life,” she said. This year is expected to be the biggest challenge yet, with more than 100 people already signed up.
According to research from the National Health Performance Authority, in 2013 the Goldfields-Mid West had one of the highest percentages of overweight or obese adults in the country.
The challenge begins February 22 and runs for six weeks. To register, phone 9091 3392.
Shane Hayes, Willow Shanks, Bernice McNamara, Donna-lee Pasli, Georgia Lander, Tony Ball and Jack Nowlan have issued the challenge.
