Essendon have signed former Brisbane utility James Polkinghorne and confirmed two-time Geelong player Mathew Stokes is also on their AFL list.

The Bombers have now signed six of their 10 top-up players, including Stokes’ old Geelong teammate James Kelly, Ryan Crowley (Fremantle), Jonathan Simpkin (Hawthorn) and Matt Dea (Richmond).

Polkinghorne joined Essendon’s VFL team in 2015, winning their best and fairest award, after seven seasons with the Lions.

A recent Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling meant Essendon lost 12 players for the season and the AFL allowed the 10 top-ups. AAP
