Eagles back in the swing of it

Kalgoorlie Miner - - SPORT -

Eagles marked their first appearance after a long Christmas break with a percentage-boosting win against Tigers last Saturday.

After two impressive wins before the recess, Eagles — who had a bye when fixtures resumed on January 16 — dominated Tigers in a 17-2 win. The Eagles’ effort was led by Toni Churchill and Carly Fordham. Donna McMeekan was Tigers’ best.

Round 11 will be played tonight, when Eagles face Starblazers.

Eagles are the last of the original clubs since the formation of the Eastern Goldfields Softball League in 1972.

Women’s softball used to be one of the region’s biggest sports, with a string of grades across all ages.

But it was reduced to one division in 2011 after the withdrawal of Ywaukees’ A and B-grade teams before Rangers and Breakers also fell by the wayside.

Eagles’ Kathy Moulton.

Umpire Dale Carter and Tigers’ Marrah Johnson.
