No­vem­ber 1. On April 25, the Anzacs landed on the Gal­lipoli penin­sula and soon wrought for them­selves a well-de­served rep­u­ta­tion as ex­cel­lent, al­beit un­ortho­dox, sol­diers.

Af­ter the fail­ure of the Gal­lipoli cam­paign, the Anzacs were with­drawn to Egypt, where the Aus­tralian Im­pe­rial Force was ex­panded to four di­vi­sions, with an­other be­ing formed in Aus­tralia.

Bri­tish High Com­mand was aware the war had to be won on the West­ern Front, where mas­sive armies were dead­locked in trench war­fare.

Gassed Aus­tralian sol­diers at an over­crowded aid post near Bois l’Abbe. The troops had been gassed in the op­er­a­tions in front of Villers-Bre­ton­neux.
