Our finals hopes hang by a thread
WE have made it hard for ourselves by losing to St Kilda last Sunday, but finals are still possible.
And as long as that is a realistic target, we’ll keep fighting to ensure we are part of the final eight. If we get there anything is possible, as we saw last year when the Western Bulldogs came from seventh to win the premiership.
We have three games to play and if we win them all we’re a chance to make the finals series and might even be able to drop one of those games and still get in. But we’ll break it down to week-by-week and see where that takes us.
This Saturday night that’s against Carlton at Subiaco Oval and we’re looking forward to what will be our second last game at Subiaco.
Obviously it is an extremely important game against the Blues, but rather than focusing on the result we’ll concentrate on the process and see where that takes us.
We have confidence in our game plan and know that when we play at our best we’re capable of beating anyone.
All season we have struggled a little with our consistency, whether that is from game to game or even from quarter to quarter in some matches. So we cannot afford any lapses against the Blues who will certainly take the game up to us.
They will make it a scrap, as they have done all season, and we’ll need to be up for the fight.
Carlton have played that way all year and despite being a relatively young team they have rarely been blown away. So, we know what to expect and we’ll need to stand up to what they bring.
Against the Saints we were good for long periods but struggled to get the ball out of our back half in the last quarter and they finished the game better than we did.
There are always things we need to work on, so we will review the game, tweak a few things and aim to be better over the next few weeks.
We expect Carlton will bring a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude and we will also need to be brave and bold with the ball in our hands.
When we were able to work the ball through the St Kilda defence we looked very dangerous and were able to score but could not hold back the Saints through the middle. We will look to change that this week. It will be a quick six-day turn-around and we’re looking forward to getting out there and trying to win another important game.
