Still chance for finals
GWS MATCH OPPORTUNITY TO LOCK A TOP 8 FINISH
AFTER a tough battle with Carlton last Saturday night, it’s now off to Sydney to face GWS.
By beating Carlton we stay in the hunt to play finals and now have to deal with the Giants. I know it’s a boring old cliche, but I said last week we have to take it one week at a time and we really have no option but to play it that way.
Things can change so dramatically from one week to the next because this competition is so even and we have seen it all year.
You only have to cast back to the game against Carlton. They came to Perth sitting 17th on the ladder and at three-quarter time scores were level.
We planned for them to play the way they did and expected them to really take the game on, so it came as no surprise to us. They have a good mix of young blokes and more senior players and they are on the upward trend.
Over the back end of the year there has been a bit of a focus on our last quarters and we were determined to finish strongly. There had been a trend that the city end of the ground was the scoring end, but that wasn't just going to happen.
There was an advantage with the breeze and it was a bit different for Subiaco Oval.
It really made goal-kicking tough at the Subi end because the breeze would pick the footy up and carry it hard left when it was travelling straight most of the way.
It won’t take Carlton long to climb their way up the ladder based on what we saw on Saturday night, but after reviewing the game early in the week, we moved on to GWS pretty quickly.
They are starting to get some of their best players back and they looked in great touch against the Bulldogs.
They’ll probably have ruckman Shane Mumford back for this one as well, so we know we’re going to need to be at our best.
We actually have a pretty good record at the ground and have great memories of an amazing win there last year when Nic Naitanui crumbed his own ball from a forward stoppage and kicked the winning goal a bit less than 12 months ago.
Obviously Nic will not be there this week, but hopefully we can get the job done and move a step closer to at last locking down a final eight spot.
