Blast from the past found

STEVEN Jones found an artillery shell while metal detecting near Dixon Road in Rockingham.

“I metal detect as a spare time hobby and I dug an early field gun artillery projectile,” he said.

Mr Jones said the shell could be as old as WWI.

“It was probably fired at another location and taken as a souvenir,” he said.

“This area has been settled since the late 1800s. It looked like it had been fired because it was missing the fuse.

“I called police and they handed it over to the bomb disposal squad.”

Mr Jones said he had dug up a lot of early relics around Rockingham and Mandurah. He has donated some to go on display at the Australian War Memorial Museum collection.

His daughter is also gaining an appreciation for metal detecting.
