Important roles on council
LOCAL government councillors represent the interests of electors, ratepayers and residents in developing policy and delivering services while chief executives carry out day-to-day roles.
The WA Local Government Association has released its 2017 webinar for potential candidates that outlines the roles within a council.
Councillors make decisions to direct the operational work and realise goals that are set out in the local government’s Strategic Community Plan.
However, some council decisions are delegated to the chief executive.
Elected members provide leadership and guidance to the community, facilitate communication between the community and the council and participate in the decision-making process at committee and council meetings.
Chief executives give councillors advice and information to ensure the local government complies with relevant legislation, and employ and manage council staff.
Most mayors are elected by the people but some are elected by their council.
