Girl bitten in the face during a dog attack in Waikiki.
WAIKIKI girl Paige Hankey (10) was bitten on the face by a dog at Seahaven Reserve park on Father’s Day.
Paige’s mother Tracee Newton said Paige asked the owner of a brown, fluffy threelegged dog and was given the okay to pat it.
“A witness said she may have gotten too close and spooked the dog,” Ms Newton said.
The dog bit Paige, scratched her near her eye and on her cheek. She also has a puncture wound just under her chin.
The Charthouse Primary School student has missed a couple of days of school as she recovers from her injuries.
“She was crying in pain,” Ms Newton said.
“The doctor thinks the wound has become infected as her mouth is swollen.”
Ms Newton said Paige is now scared of other dogs and did not want to go to the park.
City of Rockingham rangers took a statement from Paige on Monday.
Mayor Barry Sammels said the council was investigating a report of a dog attack, which took place at a designated dog exercise area.
“The City takes all reports of this nature very seriously,” he said. “We remind dog owners that they are responsible for the conduct of their dog at all times, and dogs should not be exercised off leash if they are not social or friendly to other dogs and people.”
