Mayoral hopeful a man on a mission

Kwinana Courier - - Opinion -

GEOFF Stuart wants to be the new City of Rockingham mayor.

Mr Stuart will stand at the next City of Rockingham council election in the Safety Bay ward and, if successful, plans to nominate for mayor.

The former City of Swan councillor has been a member of the Liberal Party, Labor Party and Greens over the years.

He said a pivotal issue that made him decide to contest the mayor position was dredging at Safety Bay.

“I made the decision to get rid of Barry Sammels as the mayor,” Mr Stuart said.

“They were dumping dirty grey muck on our once-pristine beach.”

He said it had been very expensive to remove the sand.

“On this particular issue, he (Barry Sammels) has failed,” Mr Stuart said.

“He did apologise for his mistake, I respect him for that.

“But why should ratepayers have to pay for these mistakes?”

Mr Stuart said that, if elected, he would ensure there was an odd number of councillors to prevent any voting being tied.

He said when there was a tied vote, the mayor got the deciding vote at the moment.

He also promised to reduce rates by one per cent “from now on”.

“I believe I can reduce rates,” he said. “People are struggling.” Mr Stuart said he would also ensure Mangles Bay was flushed out.
