Kwinana Courier - - News - Vanessa Schmitt

THE City of Kwinana has welcomed the announcement of a new Westport Taskforce to plan the Kwinana Port.

The multi-agency Westport Taskforce will outline a longrange vision to guide the planning, development and growth of both the Inner Harbour at Fremantle and the future Outer Harbour at Kwinana.

It features a team of experts from key government agencies responsible for planning, transport, environment, jobs and finances.

Together, they will develop answers to key policy questions surrounding the location, size, operating model and timing for a future port.

The WA Government announced the format of the taskforce during the CEDA’s Futureproofing Perth’s Freight Network forum.

The Westport Taskforce will be responsible for addressing a wide range of factors as part of an integrated strategy for the new Outer Harbour, including land use, transport, environmental management, financing and detailed port design.

Mayor Carol Adams said the appointment of Nicole Lockwood as chairwoman was the “perfect decision”.

“Nicole’s diverse experience traverses some of the most complex and multi-disciplinary sectors in our state, making her one of the most sought-after experts in a myriad of fields and the perfect person to lead this tremendously important project,” she said.

The taskforce announcement came just days after the South West Group – chaired by Cr Adams and representing the councils of Kwinana, Cockburn, Fremantle, Rockingham, Melville and East Fremantle – unanimously voted to support its mission to make the Outer Harbour a reality.
