LITTLE Athletics and Baldivis Soccer will both enjoy a new home after the official opening of the Baldivis South Sports Pavilion last week.

The new $4.09 million facility was completed in less than a year at a cost to ratepayers of $3.64 million.

The balance of $450,000 was provided by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.

Mayor Barry Sammels said Baldivis residents needed facilities to catch up with rapid growth.

“As one of our fastest growing regions – indeed, the entire country’s fastest growing regions – it gives me a very real sense of satisfaction to launch each project and facility for Baldivis that the City completes,” he said.

“This facility forms a component of a bigger picture suite of other projects the area needs and can look forward to in the near future, including a dog park, the Baldivis South Community Centre, the District Sporting Complex Stage 1, outdoor courts, a youth space and a recreation reserve.

“These projects fill out the five-year council plan for Baldivis. “They are scheduled and are being budgeted for.

“The future focus is on Baldivis and infrastructure and it is a very exciting time for residents who have been awaiting the commencement of construction on various facilities.

“Community infrastructure such as this sports pavilion helps to support our community’s interactions, health and leisure time and is important for fostering a strong, healthy community.

“I would like to thank Holton Connor Architects and Shelford’s Construction who made this facility a reality.”

The new sports pavilion includes clubrooms with change rooms, a meeting room, kitchen and toilet facilities.

Other works included two senior soccer pitches, a 400m athletics track, synthetic long jump run-up and pits, a synthetic cricket wicket, car parking and floodlighting.
