Boat Ramp cafe will close in June

Kwinana Courier - - News - Gabrielle Jeffery

A POPULAR beach side establishment will see in its last summer this year before closing its doors for good in June.

The Boat Ramp Café has become synonymous with its location alone - it is opposite the kite surfing pond, boat ramp and dog walking and swimming beaches.

The owners of the building are not renewing the lease for the cafe, leaving first-time business owners Matt and Trish White with the reality they will no longer have a business.

“Our business really is its location. We are popular with boaties, wind/kite-surfers, families, dog walkers and many others,” Matt said.

“Our whole business is based and reliant upon its location. We have not been able to find a suitable alternative.”

He said they had been aware of the lease conditions for three years.

“We were told about three years ago that the owner was intending to sell the building and there was no chance of an extension.”

“We understand; it’s just sad from the business side of things. The owner has always been clear and we hold no ill-will towards him whatsoever.”

The café has played an integral part of their lives with their six years of ownership, seeing the pair married and have two children.

Even Matt’s mum, Dianne, is employed at the café along with six other staff.

“We have been happy enough here and I feel we have worked quite hard to get good customers,” he said.

“The building itself is historic, we have a couple of customers in their 70s who said they used to buy bags of lollies from here when it was a deli decades ago.

“A lot of our customers are genuinely distraught that it is closing. They said they were hoping to go out in style.

“After summer we will wrap it up – we’ll have a party.”

End of an era: Trish, Matt (holding Harvey) and four-year-old Curtis White standing at the front of the cafe.
