Young Greta will spin you a good yarn

❝We want to encourage the writing of new work, to acknowledge the skills of junior poets, and to keep the spirit of Bush poetry alive❞

AN ENTHUSIASTIC audience witnessed some good old bush poetry and yarn spinning at the recent around the campfire evening hosted by Kyabram Bush Verse Group in conjunction with Kyabram Lions Club.

The evening honoured Betty Olle, a founding member of Kyabram Bush Verse Group who died last year.

Betty’s family, together with the Bush Verse Group, struck two new awards to recognise Betty’s love for poetry, an open section and a junior (12 years and under) section, both sections are Australia wide.

The junior section, which received entries from 10 young poets, was won by St Augustine’s Kyabram student Greta Sullivan.

Kyabram Lions Club member David Livsey said the aim of the Betty Olle Poetry Award was to provide an opportunity for poets to share their work.

“We want to encourage the writing of new work, to acknowledge the skills of junior poets, and to keep the spirit of Bush poetry alive,” he said.

“It was a great night that was well attended by the community. Everyone enjoyed spinning some yarns and listening to quality bush poetry.

“Bush Verse Group member Mick Coventry was MC for the night and bush poets and yarnspinners from around country Victoria and Melbourne kept the audience entertained all night.”
