Ky seconds are best
KYABRAM Seconds (7.13) were thrilled to defeat Shepparton (4.12) in the GVL Football Grand Final in 1963. Led ably by Ern Hill, the Bombers won their second premiership flag in four seasons. The Kyabram team only lost one game throughout the season and that was to Tatura.
The Bombers were strong physically and were too experienced for the Shepparton team. But Kyabram by no means had the flag dished out on a silver platter and were forced to keep the pressure on from the first bounce to the last.
Goal kickers for Kyabram were R Barret (3), E Hill, K Hartin, D Bates & L Wickham. Best for Kyabram were E Hill, K McDonell, R James, J Boardman, B Harlen, D Bates & R Clay.
The best and fairest award for the season went to Dave Bates (52 votes) followed by Ron James (29), Brian Pleitner (27), Dick Clay (26), Max Murley (24), Bernie Harlen ( 21), Ken Parks (20) & Ray Barret (20).
The Kyabram seniors were not so successful on the day in 1963 when they were defeated by Shepparton by nine points.
