Taking the story for a pleasant walk outside
CAMPASPE Regional Library Services will be combining the love of reading with the outdoors, offering an innovative outdoor reading experience.
‘Storywalk’ will be held as part of the Australian Reading Hour on Thursday, September 14.
Held at Echuca Library, Storywalk offers an interactive opportunity for children to engage in reading while outside.
Laminated pages from a children's book will be displayed along the pathway outside the library, with children and families directed to the next page of the story as they walk along the trail.
“We like to make the outdoor experience fun. Through Storywalk, children collect little stickers as they follow the story and then place them on a special picture at the end,’’ Library Services manager Jenny Mustey said.
“Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic morning/afternoon tea or even lunch and enjoy Australian Reading Hour celebrations on the lawn area outside the library or at the aquatic reserve.
“The premise (of Australian Reading Hour) is simple – pick up a book at any time of the day or night and read for an hour.’’
Australians claim reading is their number one enjoyable leisure activity and research shows reading reduces stress by 68 per cent.
It works faster than listening to music, going for a walk, or enjoying a cup of tea.
Storywalk will be offered at the Echuca Library from 10am – 5pm.
