Les is well-versed in spin­ning bush yarns

LES Parkin­son knows how to keep peo­ple on the edge of their seats when he spins a yarn or re­cites a poem.

It’s no won­der, as he’s been a mem­ber of the Kyabra­greg m Bush Verse Group for longer than he can re­mem­ber.

And next week, he’ll be among the elo­cu­tion­ary tal­ent tak­ing to the Kyabram Club stage.

Pre­sented by Kyabram Lions Club and Kyabram Bush Verse Group, Around the Camp­fire re­turns once again this year for a night of bush verse and yarn-spin­ning.

Tal­ent such as Mick Coven­try, Greg McKen­zie, Colin Mil­li­gan, Jim Carlisle and Les James are al­ready on the cards.

And if you feel like tak­ing your recita­tion nous out for a spin, there’s still plenty of time to sign up – with the club tak­ing en­tries on the night.

The per­former with the best po­etry recital will be up for the Herb McCrum Po­etry Award, with the best sto­ry­teller earn­ing the John Jo­han­son Yarn Spin­ning Award.

While most po­ems are al­lowed, Les said po­lit­i­cal pieces and bad lan­guage are not pre­ferred.

The night will kick off with per­for­mances from the win­ners of the ju­nior bush po­etry com­pe­ti­tion, held the day be­fore.

And it will con­tinue with a se­ries of recitals – from po­ems sure to keep you in stitches to yarns that will leave you with a tear in your eye.

“It’s a fan­tas­tic chance to see the tal­ent we have here in Kyabram,” Les said.

The ju­nior bush po­etry com­pe­ti­tion will be held at 9am at the Kyabram Fauna Park on Wednesday, Oc­to­ber 18. All are welcome. Around the Camp­fire runs from 7pm at the Kyabram Club on Thursday, Oc­to­ber 19.

En­try is $15 for adults and $5 for chil­dren, in­clud­ing a light sup­per.
