Kyabram Free Press - - NEWS -

IT’S been several years in the making, but the Grey Box Reserve’s walking track is finally open.

And the Kyabram Urban Landcare Group is keen to share it with you.

The freshly-gravelled 1km pathway offers the perfect walking spot through the grey box bush.

And you won’t be on your own for long, with plenty of feathered friends to be discovered along the way.

A flourishing crop of understory shrubs planted by the group has seen roughly 65 different species of birds make their new home at the reserve.

The path is also complete with new signage.

Funded by a council grant, the signs feature information of local birds, plants and general natural features in the reserve.

The path was funded by a generous $6000 donation from the late Fred Billings, a Ky local passionate about giving back to his town.

Member Doug Small congratulated the group on their hard work throughout the years, revegetating the reserve, controlling weeds and maintaining fences.

‘‘It’s an amazing little bit of bushland — and the best thing is, it’s right on our doorstep,’’ he said. ‘‘A lot of people don’t even realise. We want people to make use of the reserve. We don’t want to lock it up, we want to share it.’’

Hoping to maintain the natural balance of the reserve, the group discourages dogs and bikes on the path.

Kyabram Urban Landcare Group will be holding an official opening of the reserve on Sunday, November 26 from 2pm.

Enter at the Parkland Golf Course carpark.

RSVP to Brian 0429 834 566 or Neville 0421 556 556 by Monday for catering.
