KYVALLEY’S Community Park and Pool was flooded with locals who made their way down for Australia Day celebrations.

The crowd enjoyed a typically delicious Australian barbecue thanks to the hard work from Stuart and Neil Williams before the ceremony began.

Some local children led the beginning of the celebrations as they took part in singing the national anthem – with the whole crowd joining together as one.

Campaspe Shire councillor Neil Pankhurst kicked off the official ceremony by presenting the Kyvalley Swimming Club Committee and volunteers with the 2018 Community Group of the Year Australia Day award.

President of the group – Mrs Beryl Anderson – accepted the award on behalf of all past and present volunteers and paid tribute to the hard work that had gone into the award.

Cr Pankhurst echoed Mrs Anderson’s words by applauding the group’s effort since they had taken over the pool 25 years ago.

Mr Peter Walsh – member for Murray Plains was also in attendance and he too thanked the Swimming Club for their achievements.

Cr Pankhurst and Mr Walsh both made short addresses to the local community.

“Both men spoke of the importance of recognising Australia Day and being proud of our great country,” Bev Williams said.

Mr Neil Grummitt, a former Deakin Shire Councillor was the guest speaker for the day and provided a gripping speech on the history of Australia Day which was received well by the crowd in attendance.

Some classic Australian music was played throughout the afternoon and to top it off a cricket pitch was set up and the games quickly followed.

Mrs Bev Williams paid tribute to the volunteers who helped the day go to plan.

“Thanks to everyone who attended on the day and also to the helpers, who set up, provided the meals and helped with the cleaning and packing up.”
