Let’s all follow Fonterra’s lead

THE Stanhope and district development committee is calling for more industry to come into the struggling town.

This comes as Fonterra announced a funding boost which will see the plant double in size.

Development committee secretary Bob Holschier said the committee wants to see smaller industries who can provide additional jobs for locals in the area.

“It gives us a huge amount of confidence that Fonterra is going to be here for a very long time,” he said.

“However the town has to get behind it, at this point in time there is a lack of community support for projects.

“Our town is struggling and anything that Fonterra does will help us along.”

The committee would like to see more industry moving into the town and offering jobs to locals.

“Developments like these bring a lot of money into the town which is a really good thing but we need supporting industries around which aren’t in the cheese business,” Mr Holschier said.

“We have ideas about what could be done with the town — and they’re all possibilities but they need encouragement and some support from the shire.

“Fonterra is setting the pace but we need support to encourage people into the town.”

However Mr Holschier said for the time being the committee is focusing on attracting out-of-town buyers who may not realise the convenience of Stanhope living.

“Stanhope is a very central town, it’s close to Shepparton and Echuca and also Rushworth and Kyabram from the south and north,” he said. “Access is excellent but the town doesn’t seem to attract the attention it deserves.

“We need more young families to move into the area but a major concern for young families is the availability of jobs.

“But for a town such as Stanhope it’s so central, people can travel and it’s not that far.”
