Rice crop worry

Kyabram Free Press - - NEWS -

THE drought doom and gloom continues.

Up in the Riverina, independent agronomist John Lacy from Finley said he would be surprised if anyone’s budget can make rice a profitable crop this year.

This in spite of SunRice recently announcing price hikes for rice.

Mr Lacy said while the new prices would prevent some growers operating at a loss the margins were still too tight for rice to be a viable cropping option, particularly with the predictions the Murray Valley will not get a general security irrigation allocation until at least mid September.

There is some good news though for NSW drought stricken farmers, with the government giving more power to farmers suffering damage from kangaroos.
