‘‘The kids were good, we had fun play­ing a lot of sport at dif­fer­ent schools, and just the friends I made – that was the best part,’’ she said. Af­ter fin­ish­ing high school Ms Tran­ter started work­ing as a re­cep­tion­ist at the Kyabram Free Press in 1967. Paul Eas­ton was the ed­i­tor, she said, with Jack Matthews on ad­ver­tis­ing and the in­de­fati­ga­ble Gus Un­der­wood at the news desk.

She left Kyabram af­ter get­ting mar­ried in 1975 and now works in a re­tire­ment vil­lage based in Man­durah.
