Memories of islands last a lifetime

Life & Style Weekend - - TRAVEL - BY Sarah Harrison

WHEN I first went to Hawaii I was expecting warm weather and nice beaches, but what I got was memories that will last a lifetime. Since then I have returned a number of times and I even got married on the North Shore at Turtle Bay.

When visiting Oahu I highly recommend taking a Pearl Harbour tour to learn the history. I really enjoyed the luau and the amazing outlet shopping. My now husband also loved the surf.

Maui is fantastic for anything water-related. The snorkel tour at Molokini was amazing. It’s a volcano half-submerged under water. You will see lots of turtles and beautiful fish. But the most breathtaking moment was when we were out snorkelling and a whale appeared in front of us and breached.

If you like nature you will love The Big Island (Hawai’i). I really enjoyed the hikes – you even get to hike past a volcano. We also did a night-time snorkel with the manta rays that was an unreal experience.

What keeps bringing me back to Hawaii is there is always something new to discover. There are also so many great adventurous activities or ways to relax, whether it’s cocktails by the pool, sunset drinks or walks on the beach. I also loved the food vans. I drank freshly blended pineapple and ice from a real pineapple, and the fish tacos – yum! For the luxury dining experience , Chef Morimoto’s restaurant at the Modern Honolulu is something special.

I would recommend Hawaii for everyone. It’s great for families and kids, groups of friends, honeymoons, girls trips or boys trips – Hawaii really does cater for everyone. If I have convinced you to try out Hawaii for your next trip, come in and see me at Flight Centre Caloundra or phone on 1300 359 089.
