Support and documentation Verdict
Where do you go for help?
While a simple image viewer wouldn’t need much documentation, the photo managers in this Roundup are all multifaceted. Some, such as DigiKam and KPhotoAlbum, have detailed documentation that you can read in various formats both online and offline.
The DigiKam wiki has several usercontributed tutorials that cover a wide range of topics: from basic features to advanced image editing. The project doesn’t have a forum, but there is a mailing list to get support for problems not covered in the docs or the FAQ.
KPhotoAlbum also hosts a wiki and a mailing list. Besides textual documentation the project has several videos that introduce different features. While the videos are based on an older release, they do cover some essential functionality provided by the manager, such as facial recognition.
Shotwell’s website offers brief usage documentation which is categorised by photo management tasks. Each category further provides to-the-point guidance on various sub-topics. These are complemented by mailing lists and an IC channel but there’s no wiki or forum board.
Fotoxx has a single-page website with a brief intro, along with example images and videos of the different features. Besides that the project doesn’t have a mailing list, forum or wiki. That’s still better than XnViewMP which supplies no documentation at all and uses a forum for all support queries.
