KaOS

-

The KaOS developers argue that while the diversity offered by open source software is good, distributions should make some choices that they think best for their users. To that end, KaOS is currently based on Linux but is constantly evaluating the Illumos kernel as well. One thing it has made up its mind on, however, is the KDE Plasma desktop and the Qt toolkit. The distro does offer GTK packages in its repositories for when the KDE/Qt equivalent don’t offer matching features. KaOS is also the only distro to include the mpv media player, Kamoso, SMPlayer and SMTube apps. The inclusion of the Kaptan desktop greeter that allows users to tweak various aspects of their installation is a particularly nice touch though the placement of the application menu on the right-side of the screen takes some getting used to and there’s no apparent option to place it elsewhere on the desktop.
