Mozilla release an IoT gateway technology designed to run on the Pi. Bang & Olufsen are saving classic speakers with a Pi extension.

Mozilla has launched a new project to enable everyone to control all their “smart” IoT devices from over the web using their smartphone in a secure manner. Project Thing has been assembled for the Raspberry Pi. The software is called the Things Gateway and bridges existing IoT devices and your smartphone, using the Raspberry Pi as a gateway.

Currently it supports Zigbee and Z-Wave from brands such as Philips and TPLink. Currently, many of these sorts of devices are designed to pipe commands via proprietary hubs, with all the problems that brings. Project Things aims to standardise these web technologies into a single open standard.

The gateway software currently runs on the Pi as a local service and provides a secure tunnelling service to provide safe access over the internet. This will ensure that users can have a single, unified access to all their IoT devices.
