THE REAL MOTUNUI ISLAND
Although Motunui Island is a fictional place in the film, it’s part of Polynesia. Meaning “many islands” in Greek, Polynesia is made up of over 1000 islands in the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii and New Zealand. The team behind Moana created a group called The Oceanic Story Trust to make sure the movie stayed true to the cultures of these special places. Tahiti They even travelled to Fiji, Samoa, the and Bora Bora to learn more about traditions and mythology!
