Did you always know that the characters were going to be bugs or did you toss around other creatures?
They are ‘bugs’ but in a way they are their own magical characters. A lot of thought went into each of the five main characters and what they represented: Walter is very theatrical and open with his emotions and feelings; Crick is into science and a lot more shy than the other characters; there is Kumi who is an extrovert, very energetic and inherently caring; Jay is mischievous and playful; and then there is our youngest, Buzz, who is wide-eyed, full of wonderment for the world and enraptured with her friends. How did you end up getting artists like P!nk, Robbie Williams and Sia to sing songs for the show? We had a whiteboard in the little place my wife and I lived in at the time, that had a list of all the artists we were hoping would be involved in the project. We would send handwritten letters asking them to be a part of the show, and one by one as we went through the process, they kept saying yes. I still have a photo of that whiteboard.
Can you take us through the music process?
The music was created with the show’s musical director Daniel Johns (from the band Silverchair). The musical tracks would then be sent to artists to record their versions if we were unable to be in-studio with them.
I was a huge fan of Sia and always dreamed of her singing ‘ Blackbird’, so when she reached out and said she would like to sing the song, it was serendipitous. I remember sending her the musical track at 5:30 in the morning and going straight to bed. When I woke up, her finished track was in my inbox and it was magnificent and beyond expectation. Will there be more seasons? Who else would you love to have sing on the show? I would love to do more seasons of the show. There is still a bounty of songs left for multiple seasons and a movie. I would love the opportunity to see Bruce Springsteen sing ‘ LetItBe’ or Beyoncé to do ‘ HeyJude’ but we will just have to wait and see.
