Growing up a GRU’S GIRL
We chat to the lovely Dana Gaier who has grown up voicing Edith in all three DespicableMe movies!
Hi Dana! Can you remember your first day as Edith?
It was the same day that I got the role. I was very anxious because this was the first role I ever booked and ironically I actually had a really bad cold. Of course I was so excited, but definitely nervous and I remember I kept playing with the bottom of my shirt while I was in the recording session. They actually had to ask me to stop because the microphone was picking up the sound! It was a really fun day. Even though I was only 11 years old, I remember it like it was yesterday.
What are some differences and similarities between you and Edith?
Edith is more adventurous than me. She loves all the dangerous stuff that Gru does and I feel like I would just get too nervous around all of his weapons. I think a huge similarity is our curiousity. When she first gets to Gru’s house and is touching all of his things
she’s very curious to know what each gadget is for – that seems like something I would do.
What is Steve Carell like in real life?
Steve Carell is the nicest guy in the universe. I think that’s the best way to describe him. I’ll always remember the first time I met him at the premiere for the first film. We were both on the carpet and he walked right up to me and said, “It’s so nice to finally meet you!” Do you own any Despicable Me merchandise? My dad loves buying
DespicableMe merchandise and Edith merchandise. There’s an NBCUniversal store in the airport and every time he comes back from a trip he brings some new Minion or Edith merchandise with him.
Who do you look up to?
My sister. She’s really smart, but she’s also really fearless. I feel like I can be a bit of a worrywart and sometimes I just wish I had a little bit more tenacity when it comes to being adventurous.
