Ice­land’s leg­ends were an im­por­tant in­spi­ra­tion for JRR Tolkien, a scholar of Old Norse and the Sagas. Many Tolkien en­thu­si­asts be­lieve Ice­land’s turf houses, built from peat bricks topped by grass roofs, may have given him the idea for Bilbo Bag­gins’ un­der­ground home, Bag End, in The Hob­bit. They cer­tainly re­sem­ble hob­bit houses, but they were ac­tu­ally a prag­matic so­lu­tion to one of Ice­land’s en­dur­ing prob­lems – a short­age of tim­ber.
