THE MONACO CONUNDRUM
At just 0.78 sq miles (2.02 sq km), Monaco is small, but it punches way above its weight. With a population of about 38,000, it’s the world’s second smallest and most densely populated country. It’s a sovereign state, ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297, with its own flag, anthem and stamps – not to mention lax tax laws. The casino – a favourite of James Bond – is in the harbour district of Monte Carlo.
