TREES OF STONE

Lonely Planet (UK) - - Great Escape Northeast Aegean -

While visiting western Lesvos, we took a detour to see the remains of the island’s petrified forest – ancient trees fossilised by volcanic ash. Although only the roots and stumps survived, it’s an amazing feeling to set eyes on a tree that lived 20 million years ago. If you look closely, you can even see tree bark and leaf-prints (museum admission £4.50; petrifiedforest.gr).
