Artistic director, Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy

Lonely Planet (UK) - - Creative Amsterdam -

Every room at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands is a little bit different. One has a swing, another has a grand piano and there’s even a room with a bed that can sleep seven people. The variety is so broad, ranging from basic to elaborate, that it calls itself ‘the first one- to five-star hotel in the world’. It’s not the rooms, however, that most interest co-founder Suzanne Oxenaar. It’s the people in them. ‘For me, the hotel is a kind of tool to create meetings,’ she says. ‘We wanted to do something with all the energy that comes to visit Amsterdam. I’m interested in the cultural luggage of our guests. Are they a DJ, a filmmaker, a student? We arrange events to bring everyone together to exchange ideas.’ Events include Steinbeisser supper clubs, which aim to promote mindful eating and conversation. Even the cutlery used at these clubs has been deliberately designed to encourage slow, considered eating. ‘I’ve always been adventurous and curious, says Suzanne, ‘and in Amsterdam there are no strict feelings of borders. You can feel very free here.’
