Hotel Spy: East London Hotel, London

A new opening offers a value-for-money crashpad for exploring local nightlife

Lonely Planet (UK) - - News -

Where am I staying? At a spanking-new 161-room hotel right in the heart of London’s Bethnal Green, an easy walk from Columbia Road Flower Market, Victoria Park and the many bars of Brick Lane. It’s a few steps from the nearest Tube station, which will have you in the City in five minutes and at Oxford Circus in less than 15. What’s different here? There’s nothing as conventional as a reception desk; friendly staff in smart tweed waistcoats greet guests in the stylish groundfloor restaurant, Due East. You can check in using your mobile, and there’s a WhatsApp concierge available 24/7. The décor is equally modern, with street-art-inspired pictures and photographs of local landmarks hung against an industrial palette. Mid-century-style furniture completes the look. What are the bedrooms like? Standard rooms are tiny but high-spec, with bespoke Millbrook mattresses, Nespresso machines and bathroom bits from Rituals. Although it’s close to a busy road and train track, soundproofing is impressively effective. Large windows look out either onto the thoroughfare of Cambridge Heath Road or, more scenically, the leafy gardens of the V&A Museum of Childhood. If you need to sleep off a big night, you can shut out the world using the ultraefficient blackout blinds. Is the food any good? Limited efforts have been made to celebrate local ingredients, including bread from the excellent E5 Bakehouse and beers from Red Church Brewery, but the bar-restaurant is a place to refuel rather than linger. Breakfast offerings include bagels topped with (what else?) smashed avocado, or smoothies and overnight oats. The evening menu tends towards dishes and drinks to be shared among friends. They do a good margarita but we found the house cocktail list unimaginative – two out of the four featured rosewater – while the food also fell a little short, with some dishes inexplicably unavailable on our visit, despite near-empty tables.
