CUT­TING OUT

From each of Fab­rics A–E, cut:

■ Two (2) 2½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into six (6) 2½in x 14in strips.

■ One (1) 4½in x WOF strip. Sub­cut into three (3) 4½in x 14in strips. ■ One (1) 6½in x WOF strip. Sub­cut into one (1) 6½in x 26in strip.

From the back­ground fab­ric cut:

■ Five (5) 2½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into five (5) 2½in x 26in strips and five (5) 2½in x 14in strips.

■ Ten (10) 4½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into five (5) 4½in x 26in strips and twenty (20) 4½in x 14in strips.

■ Two (2) 6½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into five (5) 6½in x 14in strips.

From the bind­ing fab­ric cut seven (7)

2½in x WOF strips.

PIEC­ING BLOCK A

As you be­gin piec­ing, la­bel your strip sets to help you keep track. Also note that the strips are slightly longer than nec­es­sary, to al­low for squar­ing up.

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ One (1) 2½ x 14in Fab­ric A strip.

■ One (1) 2½in x 14in Fab­ric B strip.

■ Two (2) 4½in x 14in back­ground fab­ric strips.

Ar­range them as shown, then join on their long edges to make one Fab­ric B/A Strip Set 1 (Fig 1). Press.

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ One (1) 6½in x 26in Fab­ric A strip.

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ One (1) 4 in x 14in Fab­ric D strip.

■ One (1) 2 in x 14in Fab­ric E strip.

■ One (1) 6 in x 14in back­ground fab­ric strip. Ar­range them as shown, then join on their long edges to make one Fab­ric D/E Strip Set 5 (Fig 5). Press.

Square up one end of each strip set, then sub­cut hor­i­zon­tally into

2 in x 12 in strips. You will need five (5) of each of Strip Sets 1, 3 and 4, ten (10) of Strip Set 2 and four (4) of Strip Set 5.

Take one of each strip from Sets 1, 3, 4 and 5 and two strips from Set 2. Join as shown to com­plete one Block A (Fig 6). Re­peat to make a to­tal of four of Block A.

Re­peat step 11 to make one more of Block A, this time omit­ting the strip from Set 5 at the bot­tom of the block. This block will ap­pear in the bot­tom row of the fin­ished quilt.

PIEC­ING BLOCKS B– E

Re­peat steps 5–9 to make the fol­low­ing strip sets:

■ One (1) Fab­ric C/B Strip Set 1.

■ One (1) Fab­ric B Strip Set 2.

■ One (1) Fab­ric B/D/B Strip Set 3.

■ One (1) Fab­ric E/B Strip Set 4.

■ One (1) Fab­ric E/A Strip Set 5. Re­peat steps 10–12 to make a to­tal of four of Block B and one bot­tom row Block B (Fig 7).

AS­SEM­BLING THE QUILT TOP

Take the blocks and ar­range them into five rows of five blocks each, re­fer­ring the lay­out di­a­gram for colour place­ment and mak­ing sure that you use the cor­rect blocks for the bot­tom row.

Join the blocks into rows, then join the rows to com­plete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FIN­ISH­ING

Cut the back­ing fab­ric in half across the width. Re­move the selvedges and re-join the pieces with a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

Press the quilt top and back­ing well. Make a quilt sand­wich by plac­ing the back­ing fab­ric right side down, the bat­ting on top, then the quilt top cen­trally and right side up. Baste the lay­ers to­gether us­ing your pre­ferred method.

Quilt as de­sired. Felice quilted a free-mo­tion lin­ear pat­tern. 21

Trim off the ex­cess bat­ting and back­ing fab­ric and then square up the quilt.

Join the bind­ing strips to­gether end-to-end us­ing di­ag­o­nal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears, then fold in half length­wise, WST, and press.

Sew the bind­ing to the front of the quilt, fold­ing a mitre at each cor­ner.

Fold the bind­ing over to the back of the quilt and then hand stitch it in place to fin­ish.

PIEC­ING THE STRIP SETS

Take one 1 in x 6in Fab­ric D strip and one 2 in x 6in back­ground fab­ric strip. Join them on their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into four (4) 3 in x 1 in strips.

Take one 1 in x 9in Fab­ric A strip and one 2 in x 9in back­ground fab­ric strip. Join on their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into six (6) 3 in x 1 in strips. 9

Take one 1 in x 9in Fab­ric B strip and one 2 in x 9in back­ground fab­ric strip. Join on their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into six (6) 3 in x 1 in strips.

Take one Fab­ric C 1 in x 10 in strip and one 2 in x 10 in back­ground fab­ric strip. Join along their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into seven (7)

3 in x 1 in strips.

Take one Fab­ric E 1 in x 10 in strip and one 2 in x 10 in back­ground fab­ric strip. Join them along their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into seven (7)

Take five of the strips, re­fer­ring to the lay­out di­a­gram for fab­ric place­ment, and join them along their short ends. Join

a2 in x 1 in back­ground strip to the right hand end to com­plete one Row A. Re­peat to make the re­main­ing five of Row A.

Take two 2 in x 3in Fab­ric C strips and one 1 in x 3in Fab­ric E strip. Sew a Fab­ric C strip to each side of the Fab­ric E strip. Press, along their long edges, then sub­cut into two (2) 5 in x 1 in strips.

Take two 2 in x 3in Fab­ric E strips and one 1 in x 3in Fab­ric B strip. Sew a Fab­ric E strip to each side of the Fab­ric B strip, along their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into two (2) 5 in x 1 in strips.

15 Take two 2½in x 3in Fab­ric A strips and one 1½in x 3in Fab­ric C strip. Sew a Fab­ric A strip to each side of the Fab­ric C strip, along their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into two (2) 5½in x 1½in strips.

16 Take two 2½in x 3in Fab­ric B strips and one 1½in x 3in Fab­ric D strip. Sew a Fab­ric B strip to each side of the Fab­ric D strip, along their long edges. Press, then sub­cut into two (2) 5½in x 1½in strips.

17 Take two 2½in x 1½in Fab­ric D strips and one 1½in Fab­ric A square. Join a Fab­ric D strip to two op­po­site sides of the Fab­ric A square and press.

18 Take three of the strips, re­fer­ring to the lay­out di­a­gram for fab­ric place­ment, and join them along their short ends with

1½in back­ground squares be­tween them to com­plete one Row C. Re­peat to make the re­main­ing two of Row C.

19 Take three 3½in x 1½in coloured strips, two 3½in x 1½in back­ground strips and two 1½in back­ground squares. Join them along their short ends, re­fer­ring to the lay­out di­a­gram for fab­ric place­ment, to com­plete one Row B. Re­peat to make the re­main­ing five of Row B.

20 Take three 3½in x 1½in back­ground strips, two 3½in x 1½in coloured strips and two 1½in coloured squares. Join them along their short ends, re­fer­ring to the lay­out di­a­gram for fab­ric place­ment, to com­plete one Row D. Re­peat to make the re­main­ing sec­ond Row D.

AS­SEM­BLING THE CUSH­ION TOP

21 Ar­range the pieced strips as shown. Sew to­gether along the long edges, press­ing seams open or to one side.

22 Join a 2in x 17½in back­ground strip to each side of the cush­ion cen­tre. Press the seam to­wards the back­ground fab­ric.

23 Join one 2in x 20½in back­ground strip to the top and bot­tom of the cen­tre, press­ing the seam to­wards the back­ground fab­ric, to com­plete the cush­ion top.

FIN­ISH­ING THE CUSH­ION

24 Make a quilt sand­wich by lay­er­ing the lin­ing fab­ric on the bot­tom, the bat­ting and the cush­ion top, right side up, on top. Baste the lay­ers to­gether as de­sired.

25 Quilt the cush­ion top as de­sired. Felice quilted straight hor­i­zon­tal lines.

26 Trim the ex­cess bat­ting and lin­ing fab­ric and square up the cush­ion top.

27 On one long edge of each 20½in x 13in back­ground rec­tan­gle, press un­der ¼in twice to cre­ate a hem. Top­stitch in place.

28 Place the quilted cush­ion top right side up. With right sides to­gether, place one cush­ion back piece at the top, match­ing raw edges with the hemmed edge run­ning across the cen­tre. Place the sec­ond cush­ion back piece at the bot­tom of the cush­ion, with hemmed edges over­lap­ping in the cen­tre. Pin or clip all around to se­cure.

29 Sew all around the cush­ion us­ing a ¼in seam, sewing a dou­ble line of stitch­ing where the cush­ion back pieces over­lap for ex­tra strength. Clip the cor­ners.

30 Turn right side out and press, then in­sert a cush­ion pad to fin­ish.

Use a pat­terned back­ground fab­ric for even more fun!
