PIECING THE DOGS

5

Take one Template A and one Section A1 fabric piece. Place the fabric right side up on the unprinted side of the template against Section A1. Ensure that the fabric covers the whole section, plus at least in all round. Pin in place, making sure not to pin along the seam line between Sections

A1 and A2.

6

Take a Section A2 fabric piece and place it right side down on top of the Section

A1 fabric piece, matching up the raw edges on the side where Sections A1 and A2 will be joined and making sure that when folded back along the seam line, Section A2 will be covered by the fabric plus at least in all round. Pin in place.

7

Turn the template over to the printed side and stitch along the marked line between Sections A1 and A2, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Fold the template away from the seam and trim to

in. Fold the template back, turn the work to the fabric side, flip Section A2 open and then press.

8

Repeat steps 5–7 to piece the remaining sections on the template in numerical order. Trim the finished pieced template along the dotted seam allowance line on the template. 9

Repeat steps 5–8 to piece Templates B–J.

10

Take pieced templates A–J. Arrange them into groups as shown (Fig 1).

11

Join the sections into two halves, then join the halves. Remove the templates and press to complete one dog block.

12

Repeat steps 5–11 to make a total of two dog blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

13

RST, join one dog block to the top of the other dog block, with both dogs pointing in the same direction.

14

Take the two 17½in x 1½in background fabric strips. Join one to each side of the dog blocks.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

15

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together.

16

Quilt as desired. Jo quilted an interlocking square pattern. 17

Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the mini quilt.

18

Join all the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears, then fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

19

Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner, then fold it over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch it in place.

ADDING THE EARS

20

Take one Ear piece and one Ear Reverse piece and place them on top of each other, RST. Sew around the edge to join them together, leaving the top end open (Fig 2).

21

Clip v-shaped notches around the curve and then turn the ears the right way out. Fold the top raw edges inside the ear by ¼in and press. Sew the top of the ear closed and then sew it in place on the head of one of the dogs.

22

Repeat steps 20–21 to make a second ear and join it to the remaining dog, to finish.
