CUT­TING OUT

From the black prints cut:

■ Four (4) 8½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into six­teen (16) 8½in squares.

■ Four (4) 7½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into six­teen (16) 7½in squares.

■ Fif­teen (15) 4½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into one hun­dred and twenty-eight (128)

4½in squares.

From the aqua prints cut:

■ Eight (8) 8½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into sixty-four (64)

4½in x 8½in rec­tan­gles.

■ Eight (8) 4½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into sixty-four (64) 4½in squares.

From the pink prints cut four (4)

7½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into six­teen (16) 7½in squares.

From the bind­ing fab­ric cut seven (7)

2½in strips.

PIEC­ING THE SQUARE-IN-A-SQUARE UNITS

Take four 4½in aqua print squares. On the wrong side of each one, mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner.

Take one 8½in black print square. RST, place a 4½in aqua print square on one cor­ner, with the marked line run­ning from

one outer edge to the other outer edge of the black print square (Fig 1).

Stitch on the marked line and then trim ¼in be­yond the stitched line. Flip the cor­ner open and press (Fig 2).

Re­peat steps 6–7 on the re­main­ing cor­ners of the black print square to make one square-in-a-square unit (Fig 3).

Re­peat steps 6–8 to make a to­tal of six­teen square-in-a-square units.

PIEC­ING THE COR­NER-SQUARE TRI­AN­GLE UNITS

Take one 4½in x 8½in aqua print rec­tan­gle and two 4½in black print squares. Re­peat steps 5–8, tak­ing care to ori­ent both seams from up­per left to lower right, to make one left cor­ner-square tri­an­gle unit (Fig 4).

Re­peat step 10 to make a to­tal of thirty-two left cor­ner-square tri­an­gle units. 12

Re­peat step 10, this time ar­rang­ing the seams from bot­tom left to top right, to make a to­tal of thirty-two right cor­ner-square tri­an­gle units (Fig 5).

PIEC­ING THE HST UNITS

Take one 7½in pink print square and one 7½in black print square. Place them RST, then sew a seam ¼in around all four sides (Fig 6).

Cut the squares across both di­ag­o­nals (Fig 7). Open the units out and press. Trim each unit to 4½in square to com­plete four HSTs (Fig 8). 15

Re­peat steps 13–14 to make a to­tal of sixty-four HSTs.

PIEC­ING THE BLOCKS

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ One (1) square-in-a-square unit.

■ Four (4) left cor­ner-square units.

■ Four (4) HST units.

Ar­range them as shown (Fig 9). Join into rows, then join the rows to com­plete one of Block A.

Re­peat step 16 to make a to­tal of eight of Block A.

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ One (1) square-in-a-square unit.

■ Four (4) right cor­ner-square units.

■ Four (4) HST units.

Ar­range them as shown (Fig 10). Join into rows, then join the rows to com­plete one of Block B.

Re­peat step 18 to make a to­tal of eight of Block B.

AS­SEM­BLING THE QUILT TOP

Ar­range your blocks into four rows of four blocks each, re­fer­ring to the photo for place­ment and al­ter­nat­ing

Block A and Block B across each of the rows.

Join the blocks into rows, press­ing the seams of each row to al­ter­nate sides. Join the rows to com­plete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FIN­ISH­ING

Cut the back­ing fab­ric in half across the width. Re­move the selvedges and re-join the pieces with a ½ in seam. Press the seam open.

Press the quilt top and back­ing well. Make a quilt sand­wich by plac­ing the back­ing fab­ric right side down, the bat­ting on top, then the quilt top cen­trally and right side up. Baste the lay­ers to­gether us­ing your pre­ferred method.

Quilt as de­sired. Ni­cole hand quilted around the aqua zigzag shapes us­ing yel­low thread. 25

Trim off the ex­cess bat­ting and back­ing fab­ric and square up the quilt.

Join the bind­ing strips to­gether end-to-end us­ing di­ag­o­nal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears, then fold in half length­wise, WST, and press.

Sew the bind­ing to the front of the quilt, fold­ing a mitre at each cor­ner.

Fold the bind­ing over to the back of the quilt and then and stitch in place to fin­ish.
