MAKING THE HSTS

Take one 7½in pink fabric square and one 7½in background fabric square. On the wrong side of the background fabric square, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner. Place the squares right sides together, with the marked square on top.

6

Stitch ¼in either side of the marked line then cut through both layers on the marked line (Fig 1). Open the units out and press. Trim each unit to 6½in square to complete two pink HSTs (Fig 2). Repeat to make a total of twelve pink HSTs.

7

Repeat steps 5–6 with the 4½in yellow fabric and background fabric squares, trimming to 3½in square, to make a total of forty-eight yellow HSTs.

PIECING THE QUILT

8

Take the following:

■ Two (2) yellow HSTs.

■ One (1) yellow 3½in square.

■ One background 3 in square. Arrange them as shown and then join to complete one quarter-star block (Fig 3).

9

Repeat step 8 to make a total of twenty-four quarter-star blocks.

10

Take the following:

■ Four (4) quarter-star blocks.

■ Two (2) pink HSTs.

■ Ten (10) background 6 in squares. Arrange them as shown (Fig 4). Sew the squares together in rows, pressing seams to one side. Join the rows to complete one quarter of the quilt. Repeat to make a second matching quarter.

11

Take the following:

■ Eight (8) quarter-star blocks.

■ Four (4) pink HSTs. ■ Four (4) background 6 in squares. Arrange them as shown (Fig 5). Sew the squares together in rows, pressing seams to one side. Join the rows to complete one quarter of the quilt. Repeat to make a second matching quarter.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

12

Arrange the quarters in a two-by-two layout, referring to the photo for placement. Join into pairs, then join the pairs to complete the quilt centre.

13

Join the 2 in x 48 in background strips to the left and right sides of the quilt centre.

14

Join the 2 in x 52 in background strips to the top and bottom of the quilt centre to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

15

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and re-join the pieces with a in seam. Press the seam open.

16

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together.

17

Quilt as desired. Lou quilted around the print fabric shapes. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

18

Join the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

19

Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner, then fold it over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
