1 From the print fabric cut twenty (20) 15½in x 3½in strips and forty (40) 3½in squares.
2 From the solid fabric cut twenty (20) 9½in x 3½in strips.
3 From the background fabric cut: ■ Twenty (20) 9½in x 3½in strips. ■ Twenty (20) 15½in x 3½in strips. ■ Forty (40) 3½in squares.
4 From the binding fabric cut seven (7) 2¼in x WOF strips.
PIECING THE BLOCKS
Take one 3 in print fabric square and one 3 in background fabric square. Join as shown (Fig A). Press seams towards the print fabric. Repeat with the remaining squares to make a total of forty pairs.
Take one 9 in x 3 in solid fabric strip and one 9 in x 3 in background fabric strip. Join as shown (Fig B). Press seams towards the solid fabric. Repeat with the remaining strips to make a total of twenty pairs.
Take two print/background fabric pairs and one solid/background fabric pair. Join as shown to make one block centre (Fig C). Repeat with the remaining fabric pairs to make a total of twenty block centres.
Take one 15 in x 3 in print fabric strip and one 15 in x 3 in background fabric strip. Join them to either side of the block centre to complete one block (Fig D). Repeat to make a total of twenty blocks.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP
Take the blocks and arrange them into four rows of five blocks each, referring to the photo for placement. Join the blocks into rows, then join the rows to complete the quilt top.
QUILTING AND FINISHING
Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and re-join the pieces with a in seam. Press the seam open.
Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
Quilt as desired. Jenny quilted straight lines on both sides of the seams between the blocks.
Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt. 14
Join the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears, then fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.
Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner, then fold it over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
