FAB­RICS USED

Solid fab­rics are from the 1000 Colors Solids col­lec­tion by Le­cien.

CUT­TING OUT

1 From the blue fab­ric cut:

■ Forty-eight (48) 6in squares.

■ Four (4) 6½in squares.

■ Twelve (12) 5½in squares.

■ Eight (8) 5½in x 10½in strips.

■ One (1) 10½in square.

■ Seven (7) 2½in x WOF strips for bind­ing.

■ Eight (8) 5½in x WOF strips. Sew to­gether in pairs and trim to give two (2) 5½in x 60½in strips and two (2) 5½in x 70½in strips.

2 From the white fab­ric cut thirty-six (36) 6in squares and eight (8) 5½in squares.

3 From the grey fab­ric cut:

■ Twenty (20) 6in squares.

■ Four (4) 6½in squares.

■ Eight (8) 5½in squares.

PIEC­ING THE UNITS

4 Pair a 6½in blue and a 6½in grey square, RST. Draw a di­ag­o­nal on the re­verse of the grey square and sew ¼in ei­ther side of the line (Fig 1). Trim along the line and press open to make two HSTs.

5 Draw a di­ag­o­nal on the re­verse of one HST, from the un­seamed cor­ners. Ar­range the two HSTs, right sides to­gether, with each grey tri­an­gle against a blue tri­an­gle, nest­ing the seams. Sew ¼in ei­ther side of your drawn line (Fig 2). Cut on the line and press open to form two QSTs. Trim each QST to 5½in square.

6 Re­peat steps 4–5 to make a to­tal of eight (8) QSTs.

7 Re­peat step 4 with thirty-two (32) blue and white 6in squares to make a to­tal of sixty-four (64) blue/white HSTs. Use eight (8)

blue and grey 6in squares to make six­teen (16) blue/grey HSTs. Use four (4) white and grey 6in squares to make eight (8) white/grey HSTs. Trim each HST to 5 in square.

MAKE THE BLOCKS

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ Two (2) blue/grey HSTs.

■ Two (2) blue/white HSTs.

■ One (1) white 5 in square.

■ One (1) blue 5 in square.

■ One (1) blue 5 in x 10 in rec­tan­gle. Ar­range them as shown (Fig 3). Join the squares in two rows of three, then join the rows. Join the blue rec­tan­gle to one side.

Take the fol­low­ing:

■ Four (4) blue/white HSTs.

■ Two (2) grey 5 in squares.

■ One (1) 5 in x 10 in rec­tan­gle. Ar­range them as shown (Fig 4). Join the units in rows, then join the rows to­gether.

Join the sec­tions from steps 8 and 9 to make one cor­ner block (Fig 5). Re­peat to make a to­tal of four cor­ner blocks.

Take the fol­low­ing: (Fig 6)

■ Eight (8) blue/white HSTs.

■ Two (2) white/grey HSTs.

■ Two (2) blue/grey HSTs.

■ Two (2) blue/grey QSTs.

■ Two (2) blue 5 in squares. Ar­range them as shown (Fig 6). Sew the squares to­gether in rows, then sew the rows to­gether to com­plete one side block. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four side blocks.

Take the fol­low­ing units:

■ Eight (8) blue/white HSTs.

■ Four (4) white 5 in squares. ■ One (1) blue 10 in square. Ar­range them as shown (Fig 7). Sew the HSTs to­gether in pairs. Sew the units to­gether in rows, then sew the rows to­gether to com­plete the cen­tre block.

AS­SEM­BLING THE QUILT TOP

Ar­range the blocks in three rows of three, re­fer­ring to the photo for place­ment. Sew the blocks to­gether in rows, then sew the rows to­gether.

Sew the 5 in x 60 in blue strips to ei­ther side of the quilt top. Sew the 5 in x 70 in blue strips to the top and bot­tom.

QUILT­ING AND FIN­ISH­ING

Cut the back­ing fab­ric in half across the width. Re­move the selvedges and re-join the pieces with a in seam.

Press the quilt top and back­ing well. Make a quilt sand­wich by plac­ing the back­ing fab­ric right side down, the bat­ting on top, then the quilt top cen­trally and right side up. Baste the lay­ers to­gether us­ing your pre­ferred method.

Quilt as de­sired. Su­san quilted an all over free-mo­tion me­an­der­ing de­sign. Trim off the ex­cess bat­ting and back­ing fab­ric and square up the quilt.

Join the bind­ing strips to­gether end-to-end us­ing di­ag­o­nal seams. Fold in half length­wise, WST, and press.

Sew the bind­ing to the front of the quilt, fold­ing a mitre at each cor­ner, then fold it over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to fin­ish.

The swirly quilt­ing adds to the icy feel of this pat­tern
