Toast DVD

DVD authoring software for the Macs (and users) that still have the drive…

This app from Roxio is designed to make burning DVDs easier, and can help put iMovie projects and other video files on a physical disc. Since the death of iDVD and a burn-to-DVD option being absent in iMovie 10, Toast DVD could be the tool you’re after.

Toast DVD is more than a DVDburning tool. It also lets you create a menu system for videos. The editing options are limited, however, with just a handful of pre-defined themes and no way to make meaningful customisations. Worse still, there’s no easy way to preview the menu system before burning your disc. Instead, you have to create a disc image, save it and then open it in the DVD player app. Also, during our testing, a number of our iMovie projects reported they were in an unsupported format and couldn’t be added to the burn list.

Toast DVD is well designed, easy to use and does what it’s supposed to do. However, with no recent Macs shipping with DVD/CD drives and optical storage on the way out, it seems there’s little need for it. Even with older Macs and users who need to burn optical media, there’s not much point given that burning a disc isn’t that tricky. There are options to make home movies easier to navigate and use, but with the lack of editing options, we’re not sure this justifies the cost of the app. Those wishing to replace iDVD will likely be disappointed. Chris Brennan A less than stellar performance from this niche product, and pricey to boot. Difficult to recommend.
