Apple adding the ability to use third-party keyboards is likely to be big news for the platform. Sure, it’s good news for those of us who already use iOS, even if we chose never to use anything but Apple’s keyboard. But since we often hear Swype, SwiftKey and the like held up as good reasons not to switch from Android to iOS – and since Apple put emphasis on the Android switcher earlier in the presentation – it’s likely this will swell the ranks of iOS users. As with Extensibility (and earlier moves such as background app refreshing), Apple is giving people the flexibility that Android users crave, but in a way that keeps the system more secure.
