Alarms, alarms and more alarms $19 (about £12) Developer Kallaxa, OS OS X 10.7+ Requires iTunes, web connection (both optional)

Arise is an alerts system that lets you define alarms and timers that trigger actions. It can fire up iTunes (and wake a sleeping Mac), play web radio or alert sounds, take photos and screen grabs, set visual alerts, and send emails or post to a web page. There are also features for creating logs, executing commands and running shell scripts when the alert fires. However, such depth compromises Arise’s elegance. You access existing and new timers through a menu bar extra, and there’s a separate iOS-like window for housing alarms that would be better suited to being a standard app accessed using the Dock. The editing UI is simple but workmanlike, until you venture into web and scripting. Some options are a bit hidden away, such as weekday-only alarms; still, the alerts work well and there’s plenty here if you’re limited by your current alarm system. Craig Grannell
