Caribu (Free) is an app you can use for collaborative reading with someone else. It’s particularly aimed at parents who want to read books with their kids, but aren’t able to do so in person. Because Caribu has a video screen embedded, users can see each other and share the reading experience. You get one free sample book with it, but although the app is free, subsequent Caribu books are not.

There are 49 books to choose (in English and French). You can preview the first four pages of each book. In the case of the I Can Read French books, there’s an explanation of how best to use them to practise your own and your child’s language skills. Single-language books cost £1.99/$2.99 each, while the French-English books are £2.99/$4.99. Fortunately, only one person needs to buy a book in order to read it together, although if you want to be able to read it offline, you need to be the owner of the book (that is, the one who purchased it). Caribu has a decent selection of books you can read together remotely using two iPads.
