Picture CD problems

Mac Format - - APPLE TALK - David Simpson

The latest MacFormat ( MF277) appeared to have my salvation in mind with the article on page 56 (‘Quickly convert images: Turn pictures into JPEGS with just a rightclick using OS X’s Services’), but sadly I’m still in a pickle!

I have a new iMac 27-inch with a fully updated Mavericks, and I’m desperately trying to find either a free (or low-cost) way of transferring about 30 PCDs to my Mac in a JPG format. The photos are mainly of sentimental value (they were taken in Central America when I worked there).

Up until now I’ve just used a free conversion tool in Windows on my old and slow laptop, but in reality this is hopeless – it’s difficult to view the images, and, since I don’t want them all, I want to be selective.

I’ve tried GIMP and even tried to find a workaround in iPhoto with predictable results. My main concern is that the Mac just won’t import the files from the CD (even using GIMP) and I’m loath to spend money only to find my Mac can’t cope with PCD files. Is there any way I can do this?
