Screen saver photos from two laptops at once
Q I have an Apple TV and all accounts are set up so I see all my pictures on the screen saver. I’d like to know how to set it so I can see my wife’s pictures on there as well – any ideas? I use a MacBook Pro while my wife has a Windows laptop, but I’m slowly converting her into a Mac user – she has an iPhone and I might get her a MacBook Air… Chris Thornton
A You can turn on Home Sharing on your wife’s laptop in iTunes for Windows, but this forces you to choose between her photo library and yours for the screen saver. To display photos from both libraries, you’ll need to upload them to an online source. The simplest way is to create a Flickr account (flickr.com) and upload some or all of your photos from both libraries. You can send the photos on your MacBook Pro directly using iPhoto: drop down Share > Flickr and your wife can either use the upload tool at flickr.com upload or one of the many third party batch uploading tools. Then in Apple TV, select Settings > Screen Saver > Photos > Flickr. Instead of searching Flickr for individual photos that you want, you can “Add Flickr Contact” and enter the name of your Flickr account.
You can tell an Apple TV to use all the photos on the Flickr account, choose the most recent ones or pick from specific collections. But you can get even fancier than that. At ifttt.com you can set up rules that automatically save images you share on Facebook to Flickr, so they appear on your screen saver as well. Or you can tell it to include photos that other people have tagged you in. Or images you have ‘liked’. And it works for Instagram and Tumblr too. So your Apple TV screen saver can act as a photo diary of whatever either of you have been up to recently!
