Eight apps and utilities to monitor your Mac
The apps you’ll need to keep an eye on how your Mac’s faring regarding memory, disk space, CPU and more
Apple provides free tools you can use to monitor certain aspects of your Mac, but you can expand on these with third-party products should you need specific additional features. At MacFormat, we’re especially big fans of iStat Menus, because it places a huge amount of information at your fingertips and makes it all very readable; as an added bonus, the app’s modules live in the menu bar, meaning they’re always accessible. If you’re tight for funds, Menu Meters is a reasonable alternative.
A quick word of warning, though: our image (right) is a composite that shows how all of these apps look, but you shouldn’t install and run all of them. Pick your favourites, and even then only run the modules that you need – running everything at once could slow down your Mac (rather ironic if you’re using monitoring software to help unearth apps that are, ahem, slowing down your Mac).
