Memory Diag

Uncover which apps hog RAM

Memory Diag is a menu bar item that figures out which apps are hogging your Mac’s RAM resources and lets you take some of it back. It displays a graph showing the degree to which your Mac’s RAM is ‘under pressure’. It also has a colourcoded display that breaks down the culprits into categories such as File Cache and Wired Memory. They won’t mean much to most of us, but they tally with Activity Monitor.

Unsurprisingly, the figures also match those in Activity Monitor, begging the question: why bother with Memory Diag at all? Answer: the Optimize button. One click and you can reclaim 1GB of RAM.

Other features are less successful. The apps listed as using most memory didn’t match those shown by Activity Monitor. And Memory Diag is a bit of a nag, whether it’s urging you to buy its companion app, Disk Diag, or to rate it on the App Store. Still, it’s worth the download for the Optimize button alone. The Optimize button works, but the information provided is identical to that in Activity Monitor.
